The District occupies a low position as regards the literacy of its population, of whom only 1-8 per cent. (33 males and 008 females) were able to read and write in 1901. The total number of pupils under instruction in State schools in 1881, 1891, 1901, and 1903 was 527, and respectively. In 1903 there were 40 pri mary and 2 middle schools, with 27 girls under instruction in that year. The total expenditure on education in 1901 was Rs. Of which Rs. Was allotted to aided schools.
